August is upon us again which gives us a chance to sit back and take stock. Perhaps a chance to do those things that we haven’t done yet because we have been to busy.

In Matthew 11:28-29 Jesus said “Come to me, all of you who are tired and have heavy loads, and I will give you rest. Accept my teachings and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble in spirit, and you will find rest for your lives.” These are two interesting verses. Jesus is telling us to take time to rest but along with that rest there is the pull to take time to learn from Jesus. Yet such is the mystery of God that through the teaching of Jesus we will in fact find rest.

When we think about rest do we associate it with taking time to learn from Jesus? Does our time of rest include studying the word of God? Does it include taking time to pray and listen to God?

For many of us as the church programme has shut down for the summer, we have a little more time on our hands to do other things. What we do with that time is up to ourselves. But if we take the teaching of Jesus to heart then some of this extra time that we have could be wisely used to learn more from God.

So as we take some time out in August, may we also take time to be with God so that we are revitalised and reenergised in our service for Him.
