A Senior Moment! PDF Print E-mail

In a new feature, Lieut-Colonel Peter Wood will be looking at different aspects of the Christian faith.

Lest we forget

With delightful British understatement we have come to call a sudden lapse of memory a senior moment. Some thing was there on the edge of our mind, on the tip of our tongue, and it just went. To the one who forgets it can be quite disconcerting and frustrating.

But forgetting is not always a sign of some weakness. How often have we reminded ourselves that God our heavenly Father forgets our misdeeds – he remembers them no more (see Hebrews 8:12)? How often have we said to others that as a sign of spiritual strength they should try to forgive and forget? It’s not so easy. Like the little African girl at the Army’s boarding school. Some of the other children had thrown stones at her. She wrote home to her Mum: I have forgiven them, but I have kept the stones to show you when I come home.”!  Some things are best forgotten.

But, some things are better remembered, and when we approach Holy Week and Easter, we are reminded to remember what has been accomplished for us by our Lord.

Lest I forget Gethsemane, lest I forget Thine agony, lest I forget Thy love for me, Lead me to Calvary.
