The end of May has been for many years the time when Salvation Army officers/ministers change appointments. Some interesting statistics in Histon’s 110 years are as follows: 131 officers: 22 men 67 women 21 married couples During 1892-1893, Histon was worked from Cambridge. From 1918-1925, it was worked from Cottenham. In the years 1899-1900, there were three officers appointed and in 1929 alone, Histon had four different officers – there must have been a quick change! A few interesting facts emerge from the list of officers who have been at Histon. 1927 – Catherine Hargreaves later married Treasurer William Foster (Ron Foster’s grandfather). 1928 – Lieutenant John Homewood later married Captain Eva Strickland, officer at Histon from 1933-35. 1945 – Candidate Edith Peacock came (originally from Chatteris) 1953 – Lieutenant Pearl Simon had to return home to Guernsey on the passing of her mother. There have also been times when Histon has been without officers: 1977 – Ron Foster took over the leadership for a period until new officers were appointed. 1982 – Ken Carmichael also led the corps for a period of time. There have also been five members from Histon who later became officers: May Pettit, David Willson, Alma Beeton, Jean Nimmo and John Carmichael. Thanks to Joan Foster who has supplied this information.
